The Challenge
A UK LegalTech startup needed to build a B2B SaaS platform for small and mid-size law firms — replacing spreadsheets and email for matter management, client onboarding, and billing. The platform needed to handle legal professional privilege (LPP) data correctly, support AML/KYC workflows for estate agents and certain business law clients, and integrate with the UK legal billing standard (time recording, disbursements, VAT). The founding team had no previous software build experience.
Our Approach
SaaS Architecture
- PostgreSQL separate database per tenant (LPP data isolation requirement), Next.js frontend, Node.js API, Stripe billing (per-seat pricing model), AWS eu-west-2.
- UK GDPR Article 28 DPA in Terms of Service.
Legal Professional Privilege Architecture
- Document-level privilege tagging.
- Access controls enforcing LPP restrictions.
- SAR (Subject Access Request) response workflow that screens for LPP before disclosure.
- Audit log of all access to privileged documents.
AML Workflow
- CDD workflow with configurable EDD triggers.
- MLRO escalation process.
- Sanctions screening integration (Dow Jones).
- POCA 2002 tipping-off awareness — the system does not reveal SAR filing to subjects.
Retention
5 years per MLRs 2017.
Fixed price
- £85,000. 18-week build.
- R&
- D Tax Credits documented — client claimed £18,700 after completion.
The Results
Launched on time at agreed price. 12 law firm customers within 3 months of launch. 0 data incidents.
SRA audit of a client firm — platform's audit logs cited as exemplary evidence.
Seed investment secured post-launch at 4x pre-launch valuation.
“ClickMasters understood the specific data architecture challenges of legal software — particularly LPP — without us having to explain them. The AML workflow they designed is genuinely compliant, not just checkbox-ticking." — CEO, UK LegalTech Startup (name withheld)”
