The Challenge
A UK sustainable fashion startup needed to build a B2B marketplace connecting sustainable fashion brands with independent retailers. The marketplace needed: seller onboarding and verification (UK Company House and EU business number verification), buyer-seller messaging with dispute management, multi-currency payments (GBP and EUR), EU GDPR dual compliance (UK and EU buyers/sellers), and a carbon footprint tracking feature allowing brands to display verified sustainability credentials. Budget: £120,000.
Our Approach
Architecture: Next.js frontend, Node.js/Fastify backend, PostgreSQL separate schema per tenant (seller), Stripe Connect for marketplace payments (automatic fee deduction, cross-border transfers), AWS eu-west-2 (UK primary) with EU-specific data processing in eu-west-1 (Ireland) for EU user data. UK and EU GDPR Dual Compliance: Users can be UK or EU-based sellers/buyers. Architecture separates UK user data (processed in eu-west-2, subject to UK GDPR) from EU user data (processed in eu-west-1, subject to EU GDPR). Dual Privacy Notice covering both regulatory frameworks. ICO registration for UK data processing; EU representative appointed for EU data processing. Companies House and EU Business Verification: UK seller verification: Companies House API (real-time company number verification, officer check). EU seller verification: VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) for EU VAT number validation. Automatic suspension for sellers failing verification. Sustainability Credentials: Carbon footprint tracking module: integration with EcoVadis (sustainability assessment) and B Corp API (B Corp certification verification). Sellers display verified badge only when third-party certification confirmed via API.
The Results
Launched at 16 weeks, £112,000 — under budget. 340 verified UK seller brands in first 6 months. 85 EU brands (primarily Netherlands, Germany, France). Gross Merchandise Value (GMV): £420,000 in first 6 months. UK GDPR: ICO registration confirmed, zero complaints. EU GDPR: no supervisory authority contacts. Stripe Connect: 100% automated fee collection, zero disputes outstanding beyond 30 days.
“The dual UK and EU GDPR architecture was something we struggled to find any agency with real experience in. ClickMasters designed it correctly from day one — separate data environments, dual Privacy Notice, proper EU representative. Our legal team was genuinely impressed." — CEO, UK Sustainable Fashion Marketplace (name withheld)”
