Step 01

The Challenge

A UK energy technology startup had aggregation rights for 12,400 domestic smart energy assets (solar PV systems, battery storage, and heat pumps) across 8,400 UK households. They needed a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform to aggregate these assets, participate in National Grid ESO balancing markets (Dynamic Regulation, Dynamic Containment, Demand Flexibility Service), and monetise flexibility. Ofgem DCC (smart meter data), National Grid ESO API, DNSP (Distribution Network Service Provider) notification requirements, Ofgem Smart Energy Code (SEC), UK GDPR for domestic energy data, and ICO guidance on smart meter processing were mandatory. Budget: £130,000.

Step 02

Our Approach

VPP asset portfolio

4,200 solar PV (Sungrow, SolarEdge, Fronius — each with their own monitoring API), 3,800 battery storage (Tesla Powerwall, Sonnen, GivEnergy, Solis), and 4,400 heat pumps (Mitsubishi, Daikin, Samsung — via Madoka/MELCloud/SmartThings APIs).

Asset data normalisation

  • each inverter/battery/heat pump API returns data in different formats — ClickMasters normalization layer converts all to a common schema.
  • MQTT protocol for real-time asset telemetry (battery state of charge, inverter output, heat pump operating mode).

National Grid ESO Flexibility Market Participation

  • Dynamic Containment (DC): sub-second frequency response (1 Hz → 50.0 Hz).
  • Dynamic Regulation (DR): slower frequency response (30 seconds).
  • Demand Flexibility Service (DFS): demand reduction on request (National Grid calls DFS events — typically winter evening peak demand).

VPP dispatch

National Grid ESO sends signal → VPP platform receives signal → dispatch commands sent to all eligible assets within 500ms (DC) or 30 seconds (DR).

Settlement

half-hourly metered response submitted to National Grid ESO via BSC (Balancing and Settlement Code) process.

DCC SMETS2 data access

half-hourly consumption data for all 8,400 households (demand profile for DFS response verification).

DCC Data User licence

ClickMasters registered as DCC Data User on behalf of client (6-week process).

Smart meter commands

via DCC — export limitation command (reduce export if grid constraint), demand reduction command (turn off flexible loads).

ICO guidance

smart meter data is personal data — energy consumption data may reveal household occupancy patterns.

UK GDPR basis

legitimate interests (energy balancing public interest).

VPP revenue streams

DFS payment (National Grid pays per kWh of demand reduction — typically £3–£6/kWh), DC/DR payment (availability payment per MW available + utilisation payment), and Excess Solar Export (Octopus Agile sell tariff optimisation).

Revenue allocation

customer revenue share (domestic customers receive payment for their participation — displayed in household app).

Settlement

monthly settlement calculation, reconciliation against National Grid BSC settlement statements, and automated customer payment (direct bank transfer).

Step 03

The Results

Platform live at 20 weeks, £122,000 — under budget. 12,400 assets aggregated and operational.

DFS event participation: 94% of assets dispatched successfully in first 6 DFS events.

DC qualification: 8.2 MW of Dynamic Containment capacity registered with National Grid ESO.

Revenue first 6 months: £840,000 (customer share: £320,000 distributed to 8,400 households).

Average household annual payment: £38 (target: £30).

Ofgem DCC compliance: confirmed by DCC audit.

UK GDPR: ICO notification submitted.

Client Testimonial
£840,000 revenue in 6 months from 12,400 domestic assets. £38 average household payment versus £30 target. 94% successful DFS dispatch rate. 8.2 MW of Dynamic Containment registered with National Grid. The DCC integration was the technical challenge — ClickMasters managed the licence and built the integration faster than any other VPP platform we benchmarked." — CEO, UK VPP Aggregator (name withheld)
