The Challenge
A UK top-20 litigation law firm with 240 fee earners, 180 ongoing matters with court bundles, and significant manual bundle preparation cost (estimated £1.8M per year in fee earner time) wanted a digital court bundle platform — replacing PDF compilation, index creation, and pagination with an automated process. HMCTS e-bundle requirements (Practice Direction 51O — Electronic Working), SRA professional obligations, UK GDPR for litigation party data, and Legal Professional Privilege protection were the requirements. Budget: £80,000.
Our Approach
Bundle Compliance
- Practice Direction 51O (Electronic Working Pilot — extended to permanent programme): court bundles submitted electronically.
- E-bundle format requirements: PDF/A compliance (archival format), hyperlinked index (each index entry linked to document page), page numbers continuous throughout (not per document), and document metadata (title, date, page range).
ClickMasters automated bundle generation
upload documents → automatic PDF/A conversion → pagination → hyperlinked index generation → PD 51O compliance check before submission.
Bundle assembly workflow
fee earner selects documents from matter DMS (iManage or NetDocuments API) → bundles them into sections (Pleadings, Witness Statements, Exhibits, Expert Reports, Authorities) → automatic index generated (document title, date, tab number, page range).
Index hyperlinks
PDF internal links — each index entry clicks to the first page of that document.
Bundle pagination
continuous numbering (A/1, A/2... through all sections) or section-based (1-001, 1-002...) — configurable per court requirements.
LPP documents
many documents in litigation files carry LPP.
Bundle platform
every document tagged as LPP or non-privileged at upload.
Bundle generation
LPP tag check — LPP documents not included in opponent-facing bundles unless waived.
Privilege log
automated privilege log generated (document title, date, privilege type, holder, reason for privilege claim) — required in some disclosure regimes.
Access control
opponent counsel bundle (shared version) vs full bundle (firm only) — different access levels enforced at the document record level.
Matter Integration and DMS Connection
i
Manage Work 10 API
matter workspace access (documents, folders, metadata), document retrieval (PDF, DOCX, XLSX), and version history.
NetDocuments API
equivalent integration for firms using NetDocuments.
Document classification
ClickMasters NLP classifier assigns document type on upload (Pleading, Witness Statement, Exhibit, Expert Report, Correspondence — 94% accuracy).
Matter timeline
court order dates and hearing dates from matter DMS — automatically generate "documents to be filed by [date]" workflow.
The Results
Platform live at 14 weeks, £74,000 — under budget.
Bundle preparation time: 18.4 hours → 2.8 hours per bundle (85% reduction).
Annual fee earner time saving: £1.3M (72% of £1.8M target).
PD 51O compliance: 100% — zero non-compliant bundles submitted.
LPP accidental disclosure: zero (privilege tag enforcement). iManage integration: 240 fee earners active within 4 weeks.
Fee earner satisfaction: 4.7/5 (previous manual process: 1.8/5).
“18.4 hours to 2.8 hours per bundle. Across 180 ongoing matters, that is transformative capacity. £1.3M fee earner time saving in year one. Zero LPP accidental disclosures — the privilege tag enforcement has prevented what would have been very serious professional incidents. Fee earner satisfaction from 1.8 to 4.7. The firm's highest-rated technology implementation in our history." — Managing Partner, UK Litigation Firm (name withheld)”
