The Challenge
A UK FinTech startup needed to build an FCA-authorised Account Information Service Provider (AISP) platform that could aggregate bank account data from multiple UK banks, display personalised financial insights, and support a freemium-to-paid conversion model. The client had 6 months to first paying customers and a seed budget of £180,000 for the full build. Previous development partner had quoted £350,000 for the same scope.
Our Approach
Architecture: TrueLayer aggregator (avoiding direct FCA AISP authorisation for MVP), Next.js frontend, Node.js API, PostgreSQL with row-level security for multi-tenant data isolation, AWS eu-west-2 for UK GDPR data residency, Stripe billing. FCA Consumer Duty Compliance: No dark patterns — all UX reviewed against FCA Consumer Duty principles. Transparent fee structure. Vulnerable customer pathway built into onboarding. Outcome monitoring instrumented from launch. UK GDPR Architecture: Financial data is sensitive — not technically special category data under UK GDPR, but handled with equivalent care. Article 28 DPA with TrueLayer. Consent-based data processing for banking data. Right to erasure implemented including TrueLayer token revocation. Delivery: 12-week Agile build. Fixed price. R&D Tax Credits documentation provided — qualifying spend identified for client's accountant.
The Results
Delivered on time at £165,000 (within budget). Launched to beta users at Week 12. 450 signups in first month. 8% freemium-to-paid conversion. FCA authorisation application supported with technical documentation. R&D Tax Credit claim filed — £38,000 returned.
“ClickMasters delivered exactly what they scoped, on time, at the agreed price. Other agencies quoted twice as much. Their understanding of FCA Consumer Duty and Open Banking compliance architecture meant we didn't have to educate them on our regulatory context — they already knew it." — CTO, UK FinTech Startup (name withheld)”
