The Challenge
A UK EdTech startup wanted to build an adaptive learning platform for GCSE revision — serving Year 10 and Year 11 students. ICO AADC compliance (all users under 18), dual B2C (direct student subscription) and B2B (school licence) channels, and adaptive question difficulty algorithm. Budget: £80,000.
Our Approach
Privacy by default
- high privacy settings as default for all users.
- No behavioural advertising.
- No nudge techniques to encourage over-sharing.
Age gate
- under-13 users require parental consent (email verification of parent). 13–17: student's own consent valid but must be in plain language.
- No social features (messaging, competitive leaderboards showing personal names) without explicit opt-in.
Adaptive Algorithm
Spaced repetition (SM-2 algorithm) + dynamic difficulty adjustment: question difficulty increases when a student answers 3 consecutive questions correctly, decreases after 2 consecutive incorrect.
Knowledge graph
- 8 GCSE subjects × 400+ topic nodes, each with prerequisite relationships.
- Mastery score per topic drives spaced repetition scheduling.
B2C
Stripe subscription (£5.99/month individual).
B2B
school licence with class management dashboard, teacher progress view (not individual student performance — privacy protection), bulk student import via CSV.
School admin portal
- SIMS-compatible CSV format for bulk onboarding.
- Offline Learning (PWA):
Progressive Web App
- Service Worker caches question bank per subject for offline revision.
- Offline answers queued and synced on reconnect.
UK GDPR
Service Worker cache cleared on logout, progress data never cached unencrypted.
The Results
Launched at 12 weeks, £76,000 — under budget. 4,200 students in first 6 months (2,800 B2C, 1,400 via 12 school B2B licences).
ICO AADC audit: zero findings.
Revision session length: 23 minutes average (industry benchmark for effective revision: 20–30 minutes).
Student retention at 30 days: 64% (industry benchmark: 45%).
Series A conversation at month 7.
“The ICO AADC compliance was the feature that differentiated us from US competitors in the UK market. Schools will not adopt EdTech that cannot evidence AADC compliance. ClickMasters built it correctly from day one — it is in our sales deck as a key differentiator." — CEO, UK GCSE EdTech (name withheld)”
