The Challenge
A UK EdTech startup needed to build a formative assessment and pupil progress tracking platform for UK primary and secondary schools. The platform needed KCSIE safeguarding compliance, integration with SIMS MIS (the dominant UK school management information system, used by 65% of UK schools), WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility (required under PSBAR for school websites), and the ICO Age Appropriate Design Code for the pupil-facing interface. Budget: £85,000.
Our Approach
KCSIE Safeguarding Architecture
- No direct pupil-to-teacher private messaging channels.
- All communications visible to class/school administrators.
- Audit log of all access to pupil data (sufficient for safeguarding investigation).
Access control
- teachers can only see their own classes
- safeguarding leads have cross-school visibility.
SIMS Integration
ClickMasters enrolled in the Capita SIMS Developer Programme.
Built SIMS API integration for
- pupil data sync (name, class, year group, SEN status), teacher data sync, and attendance data pull.
- Two-way data elimination of manual entry — pupil onboarding automated from SIMS.
- ICO Children's Code (AADC)
Compliance
Pupil-facing interface: privacy settings default to high, no commercial profiling, geolocation off by default, no nudge techniques.
Teacher/admin interface
- standard privacy settings.
- DPIA completed for pupil data processing.
- Separate consent flows for under-13 (parental consent) and 13–17 (pupil consent).
- WCAG 2.1
AA Throughout
- GOV.UK Design System components as baseline (already WCAG 2.1 AA).
- Manual screen reader testing with NVDA.
- Keyboard-only navigation tested on every sprint.
- Automated Axe scanning in CI/CD.
The Results
Launched to 3 pilot schools within 16 weeks at £78,000 — under budget.
KCSIE audit by one pilot school: zero safeguarding concerns raised.
SIMS integration: 450 pupil records auto-synced in first school.
ICO Children's Code: zero violations in independent AADC audit.
Teacher satisfaction: 4.4/5 in pilot feedback. 11 schools onboarded within 6 months of launch.
“The SIMS integration worked first time and saved our admin team hours of data entry per week. The safeguarding architecture gave our DSL complete confidence. WCAG compliance was tested properly — not just run through an automated checker." — Headteacher, UK Primary School (name withheld)”
